The smokestack had even attracted daredevils, from local youths to Greenpeace protestors. Once a sign of prosperity, the stack had over the years become a symbol of environmental pollution. Earthquake damage in 1937 necessitated repairs and the stack was reduced to 562 feet in height. Considered at the time an engineering gem, it was constructed of 2.5 million bricks, approximately 5,000 tons of mortar and stood 571 feet tall, making it then the largest smokestack in the world. In the 1920s the Port of Tacoma granted a 30-year lease of harbor land to the American Smelters Securities Company to allow for an extensive plant expansion. ASARCO operated the smelter at the Ruston site until its closure in 1985 due to weak copper markets and a need for pollution control. It had been one of Pierce County’s largest employers. Rust sold the plant for $5.5 million in 1905 to the American Smelter and Refining Company (ASARCO), which converted the plant for copper smelting and refining in 1912. Two years later it became the Tacoma Smelting and Refining Company, under the ownership of William Rust (1850-1928) who began modernizing and expanding the facility. Like they really did not want to be there. At 12:40 p.m. As we ate I took in the surroundings and observed that every waitstaff that walked by just did not have a pleasant look on their face. It took our food forever to get to us and was lukewarm when it did finally get to us.delivered by someone other than our waitress, but also forgot some items. Her reply was basically don't waste your money as it was the most expensive she'd seen anywhere. My brother-in-law inquired about the cost of one of the whiskey brands that was served and our waitress did not know the price, but went to ask. My wife ordered a combo deal that included a drink and while we were all served our drinks she never got hers and we had to ask for it twice. I overheard that server relaying our request to our waitress in a very disrespectful/sarcastic tone. Her visits to our table became less frequent so my wife had to ask another server if we could move inside. The service seemed to start off pretty good as our waitress took our drink order fairly quickly, but simply went downhill from there! She was very short and would leave before we could finish our questions, however, I observed her making small talk with the table next to us. We liked the look of Stack 571 and one of our family member's enjoyed his whiskey so we decided to endure the 45 minute to 1-hour wait. We were vacationing in WA with family and were on the waterfront enjoying the farmers market and decided to get some lunch. ![]()
